I wrote an article recently how 1 in 5 women in the US are addicted to prescribed narcotics.
Today it was announced that Tennessee enacted a law that will allow them to incarcerate women who are taking illegal narcotics (it’s cool if their doctor prescribes them) From the piece:
The new law, which goes into effect July 1, allows a woman to be prosecuted for assault if she takes illegal narcotic drug while pregnant and the baby is born addicted, is harmed or dies because of the drug.
Incarcerating Pregnant Women Who Use Drugs
So, no consequences for the women taking prescribed narcotics but if they take narcotics without a script they can go to prison? Both can be potentially harmful to the baby. Why not crack down (no pun intended) on the doctors whipping out their script pads and doling out narcotic prescriptions like candy? I guess that’s ok. I wonder if the statistic is similar for pregnant women taking narcotics illegally as it is prescribed. I really don’t see much of a difference. Apparently the law does.
